What are alder cones?
Alder cones are reddish-brownish, small, lignified fruit ends that grow exclusively on the black alder (Alnus glutinosa). The alder cones are particularly easy to recognise in the autumn months and can then be picked fresh from the trees. The alder cones are said to have some positive characteristics that can be of great benefit when the cones are used in an aquarium. For example, alder cones have a germicidal effect and can therefore protect the water in the aquarium from the development of unattractive germs and bacteria. They also have an antibacterial effect and have been proven to reduce fungi and any other pathogens, so they can have a positiveeffect on the health of the aquarium inhabitants. At the same time, the popular cones can lower the pH value of the water due to the humic acid they contain.
Alder cones can also increase the well-being of the aquarium inhabitants by giving the water a slightly brownish color and providing shelter for the inhabitants. In this way, the living conditions in the aquarium come closer to those in the wild. Alder cones are also beautiful to look at and therefore also fulfil their purpose in terms of an attractive design and decoration of the aquarium.
Why do alder cones help to fight fish diseases?
The antibacterial effects of alder cones clean the habitat of aquarium inhabitants and thus regulate the development of health-endangering germs, bacteria and fungi. As soon as there are or can be fewer flocks of germs and pathogens in the aquarium, the risk for the animals living there to suffer from any diseases decreases considerably. Alder cones are therefore a completely natural means of preventing various diseases.
For which diseases are alder cones particularly helpful?
The use of alder cones is particularly useful for combating fungal and parasitic infestations. The diseases listed below can therefore be treated well with the support of alder cones:
- Fin rot
- Gill rot
- Tumbling sickness
- Mycosis (fungus)
Application notes and availability
Alder cones are available in specialist shops or on the Internet, but can also be collected or harvested in nature itself. The number and chosen placement of the alder cones should depend on the size of the aquarium. It should also be noted that alder cones can strongly acidify the water in the aquarium if they lower the pH value. The pH-value should therefore always be controlled so that the inhabitants of the aquarium continue to feel comfortable.
The perfect quantity for the use of cones in aquariums therefore does not exist. Every aquarium keeper must carefully try to find the ideal dosage himself. As a rule, alder cones develop their positive effects for several weeks. After that they should be replaced by new cones if possible. It is of course possible to keep the old alder cones in the aquarium. They decompose by themselves over time or are eaten by the aquarium inhabitants.
