Mulch vacuum cleaner for the aquarium

Over time, more and more waste material accumulates in an aquarium, which is called mulm. On the one hand, these look unattractive and on the other hand, they can also produce fermentation gases. The latter impairs plant growth, which of course must be avoided.

In addition, the fermentation gases can also harm fish and other tank inhabitants. It is therefore very important to remove the sludge regularly. This applies to both freshwater pools and saltwater pools.

What is sludge?

Mulm consists mainly of hardly degradable residues from various waste materials, which accumulate in every aquarium and also in nature. Some typical examples are food leftovers, fish excrements as well as fallen or dead leaves. The problem is that these remains do not always sink directly to the bottom of the tank. Instead, they dissolve in the water and must be broken down by the bacteria in the filter as well as in the aquarium.

The remains after the decomposition phase then accumulate at the bottom as visible mulm. This is therefore a mixture of various waste materials and remains after degradation processes in the tank. Rarely the detritus is also called detritus.

Why is a sludge vacuum cleaner useful and sensible?

To remove the debris, a debris vacuum cleaner is very practical. It reliably removes the remains and thus prevents the above-mentioned fermentation gases from developing. In addition, the user also takes water out of the pool with the skip vacuum and thus carries out a partial water change.

What types of skip vacuum cleaners are there?

There are three different types of skip vacuum cleaners:

Aquarium floor cleaner:

The Aquarium Bottom Cleaner sucks up the water with the dirt and guides it into a bucket. In this way a partial water change is carried out at the same time. Many of these Aquarium Vacuum Cleaners have a bracket that makes it very easy to attach the hose in the tank.

Floor cleaner for the air pump

This design uses the air pressure of the air pump to suck in the water and direct it into a chamber. There it is filtered and then flows back into the aquarium.

Electric floor cleaners

Probably the most convenient way to clean the bottom of an aquarium of mulm is to use an electric floor cleaner. Such models are usually battery powered and pump the water and the debris completely independently through the suction bell through a collection bag that filters out the coarse debris. The cleaned water then runs back into the pool. The great advantage of these models is that the user no longer has to suck it up himself. Furthermore, no additional utensils are needed, such as a bucket or an air pump. On the other hand, these models are comparatively loud and filter only averagely well.

All three presented variants have some advantages. So everyone has to decide for himself which version suits him best. It is only important that at least part of the debris is regularly vacuumed off.
