Why you should not breed Mysida
In this article we will deal with the topic of Mysida as live food. We also show why you can breed other life forms more easily than food. The floating shrimp Mysis is also called Mühsis by insiders, because the breeding is not profitable in any way. If you want to harvest high-quality food regularly, you should rather breed Artemia. This is much more productive than cultivating the floating shrimp (source: Shrimp.net).
But why is it that the floating shrimp is not as productive as other live food? Quite simply, the floating shrimp usually comes from the Baltic Sea and is an extreme cannibal. Especially when it comes to the juveniles, they are eaten quite quickly. If you want to give it a try, you should separate the young from their parents. That way you will be able to maintain the population in the best case. Nevertheless the breeding remains quite time-consuming and not very productive.
Breeding mysis is tedious
If you really want to start breeding the floating shrimp, then you should look for a less voracious species. Here the tropical orange coloured Mysis comes into question. However, it is much faster than Baltic Sea floating shrimp and therefore not suitable as live food for all ornamental fish. But I don’t want to keep you from your luck, if you have developed a good technique or have achieved success, then write a comment.
There are also other floating shrimp like the Nigerian one. Here you can achieve halfway respectable reproduction rates, but with a body height of up to 4.5 cm these shrimp are too large for most ornamental fish. If your fish have no problems with the size, you can also breed normal dwarf shrimp, they have a much higher offspring number and reproduce without much effort.
Trick for breeding
The Mysis from the Baltic Sea carry very few eggs, therefore few young animals are born. If you would like to try breeding, here is a little tip: Separate the breeding container in two parts, separated by a net or sieve, through which the parent animals cannot get through. Now put a lamp on the side where the kittens should go. The newly hatched kittens will now try to reach the light. It is also important that the salt content is correct. Because the different sources give different salt contents and I have not yet produced professional breeding results, I cannot give any recommendation here. If you have further tips or tricks, I would be glad about a comment.
