Panoqolus L403

The Panoqolus L403 belongs to the catfish family. Its name is little known in this country, although it has numerous optical attractions. Which characteristics make the fish special and in which aquaria it feels particularly at home can be read in the following article.

What distinguishes the Panoqolus L403?

The number L403 refers to the catfish’s region of origin. It lies in the area around the Brazilian river Rio Anapu. Furthermore, the animals are members of the Loricariid catfish.

The appearance of Panoqolus L403:

The body of this breed appears to be drop-shaped. Their head is of a distinct texture, towards the caudal fin the body volume decreases. Besides stripes in bright orange, pointed spines can be seen on the surface of the animals. The basic colour of the Panoqolus ranges between black and anthracite, occasionally it changes to brown. On average, the animals can grow to between eight and twelve centimetres when fully grown.

  • Drop-like, flat body
  • On the surface orange striped and equipped with spikes
  • Black-grey, partly brownish ground colour
  • Average length varies between eight to twelve centimeters

Housing conditions:

The Panoqolus is compatible for small groups. A group should in any case contain four or more fish. Because of its socially acceptable behaviour this catfish is an ideal inhabitant of community tanks with other conspecifics or fish breeds. Live food must not be eaten in too high amounts, otherwise health problems could occur. Vegetable food provides them with essential vitamins. Floating plants on the water shield bright light from the aquarium. The capacity of the tank should be about 100 litres.

  • Panoqolus = suitable for small groups
  • Optimal stocking: At least four animals or more
  • Peaceful trait, gets along with his conspecifics and other fish
  • Only a limited amount of meat-containing food may be added to catfish, excessive consumption would result in obesity
  • Mixed diet between meat and vegetable is balanced
  • Floating plants as protection against intensive light
  • Capacity of the aquarium: about 100 litres

Gender differences:

Differentiating the sexes is not easy with these loricariids. Female fish do not reach the size of their male counterparts, they appear more stocky and have fewer spines. At first glance, no differences between male and female catfish can be discerned at a young age.

Water values for Panoqolus L403:

The Panoqolus feels at home at a temperature of 26 to 30 degrees. A water hardness in the range of 0 to 14 dGH is well tolerated, the pH value should be about 6 to 7 high.

Food and nutrition for the Panoqolus L403:

Although Panoqolus omnivorous, it should still be given vegetable food and catfish tablets. Nutrients contained in these improve the resistance of the catfish. In addition, fine wood shavings are needed to keep the fish’s digestion healthy. Tree roots, which are deposited at the bottom of the tank, are suitable for this purpose.

The ideal aquarium for the Panoqolus L403:

For the catfish species, hiding places are an indispensable component. They are often found there for a long time. In the aquarium roots, cave devices or aquatic plants fulfil this purpose. At the same time the catfish feel most comfortable in a dimly lit environment. For the bottom the choice is obvious Gravel or fine sand. The plants in the tank must not be too sensitive, as they are occasionally used by the animals as food supplements.

Features of the Panoqolus L403:

There is a danger of confusion between the breeds Panoqolus L403 and L374, because their appearance hardly differs from each other.
